Olufela Olufemi Anikulapo Kuti, ou simplesmente Femi Kuti, filho mais velho de Fela Kuti com sua primeira esposa, nasceu em 1962 em Londres. Com apenas quinze anos começou a acompanhar o pai em palco.

Cantor e multi-instrumentista (saxofone, teclas, trompete), Femi formou a sua própria banda - The Positive Force - em 1986, ao lado de Dele Sosimi. Polémico, frontal e interventivo, tal como o seu pai, Femi dá às palavras que canta um peso fundamental na sua música. Apoiando-se em letras de fortíssimo matiz político e social - à mesma escala do hip-hop, não sendo por isso de estranhar a sua amizade e colaboração com rappers norte-americanos como Mos Def ou Common -, a música de Femi Kuti nunca deixa, apesar disso, de ser extremamente festiva e positiva. O Afro Beat, criado por Fela Kuti, é um estilo musical único que funde o Jazz, a Soul Music e os elementos do Funk afro-americano com a sonoridade da África Ocidental, a música tradicional nigeriana e ritmos Iorubás. Uma verdadeira catarse espiritual e underground.

Com seu time musical, entrava em longos transes percussivos acompanhados de baixos elétricos, guitarras em profusão, coro feminino em primeiro plano (16 das suas 27 mulheres participavam harmonicamente na sua banda) e um mar de instrumentos de sopro. Os principais instrumentos de Fela, era o saxofone e o teclado, mas ele também tocava trompete, guitarra e ocasionalmente solos de bateria.

Notório canabista, fazia questão de ostentar baseados imensos, que esfumaçavam a cara de suas visitas...

A música de Fela se tornou bastante popular entre os cidadãos nigerianos e africanos em geral. À medida que a música de Fela tinha se tornado popular na Nigéria e em todo lugar, ela também era bastante impopular entre o governo no poder e ataques à sua residência/comunidade/estúdio, denominada de República Kalakuta, eram freqüentes. Em 1974, a polícia chegou com um mandado de busca e um cigarro de cannabis, o qual tinha a intenção de ocultar em posse de Fela. Ele se deu conta disso e engoliu o cigarro. Em resposta, a polícia o levou em custódia e esperou para examinar suas fezes. Fela conseguiu a ajuda de seus companheiros presos e entregou à polícia as fezes de outra pessoa, Fela foi assim liberado. Ele então relatou o incidente em seu lançamento Expensive Shit.
