Henry James, mais conhecido como Peter Broggs, nasceu em 1954 na comunidade rural de Richmond - Lucea em Hanover - Jamaica. Peter e mais 10 irmãos sobreviviam da mesma maneira que a maior parte da população da pequena ilha da Jamaica. Citando uma frase do próprio Peter Broggs "... quando muitas vezes nem sequer comida tínhamos, o melhor que poderíamos fazer era cantar, tentando manter uma atitude positiva perante a vida..." Foi em finais dos anos 60 , princípio dos anos 70 que Peter, tal como a maior parte dos jovens que viviam nas comunidades rurais, partiu para a Capital da Jamaica - Kingston - com o objetivo de melhorar as condições de vida e sobretudo ganhar algum dinheiro que lhe permitisse ajudar os seus Pais. É em Kingston, com as influências da Religião Rastafari e conseqüentemente da música reggae, que Peter, com algum dinheiro que tinha poupado há algum tempo, aluga algumas horas num estúdio e em parceria com uma das respeitadas bandas de todos os tempos - Roots Radics - grava o primeiro single, "Vankout", em 1975, que ele próprio vendia. Nos meses seguintes Peter trabalhava e ia escrevendo algumas letras para futuras canções, até que Bim Sherman lhe deu a oportunidade de trabalhar com ele todos os dias no estúdio, oportunidade essa que, segundo Peter Broggs, lhe deu bastante experiência. Em 1977 quando Clement "Coxsonne" Dodd (Studio One) lhe deu a oportunidade de gravar "Sing a New Song" surgiu o nome artístico Peter Broggs. Por mérito próprio e pela fama de ter gravado no famoso Studio One, Peter assina um contrato com Bingy Bunny (que integrava a banda Roots Radics e os Morwells). Desta ligação surge o primeiro LP de Broggs, o álbum "Progressive Youth", lançado na Inglaterra pela editora Ital entre 1979/80. Alguns meses se passaram até que Peter Broggs recebe uma notícia de que alguém, que tinha chegado de carro alugado, andava a sua procura. Essa pessoa apresentou-se como Doctor Dread e disse-lhe que adorava as suas músicas, chegando mesmo a cantarolar um pouco a canção "Forward Natty Dread, Forward" do álbum "Progressive Youth". Explicou-lhe também que fazia um programa de Reggae numa estação de Rádio nos Estados Unidos e que estava ali porque tinha escrito uma canção e queria que Broggs a interpretasse. Ele aceitou o desafio e 5, 6 meses depois, Broggs contatou Doctor Dread dizendo-lhe que estava preparado para gravar. Doctor Dread disse-lhe para ele reservar o estúdio Channel One e " arranjar " alguns músicos. O resultado foi em 1982 a edição do primeiro álbum do catálogo de uma nova editora Reggae nos Estados unidos a RAS Records (propriedade de Doctor Dread) e uma excelente oportunidade para Peter Broggs mostrar o talento para toda a América. O álbum vendeu lindamente e conseqüentemente surgiram em 1985 "Rise and Sine", "Cease The War" em 1987 e "Reasoning" em 1990, todos pela editora RAS. Em 1993, altura em que o Dancehall Ragga estava no auge na Jamaica, é lançado o álbum "Reggae in Blues". Peter consegue recuperar a verdadeira essência do Roots Reggae. Compositor, arranjador e interprete, ele ensinou Bob Marley, Derrick Harriott, Peter Tosh, Bob Andy, The Wailing Souls e Bunny Wailer. Foi um dos primeiros artistas locais a gravar na Jamaica.
