CULTURE - More Culture (1981 - Original Version)

O Culture, chamado primeiramente de African Disciples, foi formado em 1976. Era composto por Joseph Hill, seu primo Albert “Ralph” Walker (que, segundo Hill, foi quem primeiro teve a idéia de formar o grupo) e Kenneth Paley. O trio vocal gravou seus primeiros compactos para Joe Gibbs e depois para Sonia Pottinger (do selo High Note, herdeiro do lendário estúdio Treasure Isle).
O trio se separou entre 1982 e 1986, mas foi um período curto se comparado com os 26 anos em que estiveram juntos, sempre tocando com a nata dos instrumentistas jamaicanos e se estabelecendo como um dos mais produtivos grupos vocais da Jamaica. Depois da pausa o grupo voltou com um som mais moderno, embora ainda centrado nas mensagens rastafari e sem se adaptar totalmente ao dancehall, que já dominava as paradas da ilha. Até o fatídico 19 de agosto, quando Joseph Hill teve um colapso na Alemanha que tirou sua vida, lançaram 22 álbuns originais, dois de dub e um ao vivo por gravadoras importantes como a Ras Records, Shanachie, VP e Heartbeat.

O Culture se manteve como um dos mais respeitados representantes do roots reggae, se apresentando sempre com muito sucesso em todo o mundo, inclusive no Brasil. As performances dinâmicas e elétricas de Joseph Hill deixavam a todos boquiabertos, se perguntando onde ele conseguia tanta energia. Hill e seus companheiros de Culture eram bem-sucedidos em unir as mensagens do rastafarianismo com o domínio completo das harmonias vocais, chegando a um estilo musical que, ao mesmo tempo em que elevava o ouvinte espiritualmente, o fazia pensar e também se movimentar ao som do reggae. WINSTON JARRETT & THE RIGHTEOUS FLAMES - Man Of The Ghetto

Winston Jarrett nasceu em 14 de setembro de 1940 em Lime Tree Gardens, Saint Ann, na Jamaica. Aos cinco anos migrou com a mãe para Kingston, onde cresceu na favela de Jones Town, adjacente a Trench Town.

Aprendeu a tocar violão com Jimmy Cliff e com Alton Ellis os acordes.

Winston Jarrett é um sobrevivente no sentido da palavra. Teve uma vida dura, sofreu maus tratos e perdeu sua casa e posses em um incêndio. Sobre ele ocorreram acidentes que fariam quebrar o mais forte dos corações. Os reveses, porém o fez mais forte.

Começou sua carreira como um membro de Alton & The Flames, em meados dos anos sessenta. Formaram os virtuosos Chamas e gravaram para o Studio One, Treasure Isle e Lee Perry, entre outros.

No início o grupo era formado por Alton Ellis e Eddie Perkins. Quando Perkins foi embora para os EUA, em 1965, Alton recrutou Winston, juntamente com Eggar Gordon. Gravavam logo uma série de hits clássicos de rock-steady.

Em 1969 com a partida de Alton Ellis para a Inglaterra Winston reformulou o grupo como “The Righteous Flames”.

"Man Of The Ghetto" foi produzido em 1977 por Tony Shabazz e pelo próprio Winston Jarrett. O disco contou com importantes nomes do reggae como Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare e Bobby Ellis.
