Max Romeo, também conhecido como Moxie, nasceu em Alexandria, St. Ann, Jamaica. Uma força excêntrica do mundo do reggae. Sua voz de tenor penetrante morde as canções com ferocidade. Seu hino marcial “War In A Babylon”, foi um enorme sucesso na Jamaica até a sua interdição em 1976, altura em que o governo jamaicano declarou o estado de sítio.

Max conta a sua própria história:

- Não quero dar opiniões políticas porque tenho medo dessa palavra. A política é o meu grande terror.

- De qualquer modo, você escreveu uma canção sobre o socialismo...

- Mas era sobre o conceito de socialismo e não sobre um partido político. Não era sobre o socialismo de Cuba ou doutro país qualquer. Para mim socialismo quer dizer social. Isso significa amor.

- O governo utilizou a sua canção para a campanha eleitoral...

- Mas eu não a escrevi para eles... Eles utilizaram-na e nada mais. A inspiração para a composição da canção não era política. Os políticos servem-se de nós para ganharem as eleições, sabe? Eu sou do ghetto. E tenho amigos entre as pessoas que sofrem imensamente. Noites sem saber onde dormir, dias sem comer nada e nem sequer podendo ir a lado nenhum, pois não há dinheiro para comprar sapatos ou calças para ir a certos lugares, pois que na nossa sociedade é necessário vestirmo-nos, mesmo que seja só para ver o que se passa. E mesmo que o orgulho supere o preceito e que digamos “que se lixem as roupas!” acabamos sempre por ser expulsos! É a isto que chamamos falta de possibilidades. O sofrimento. Eu sou sempre comandado por sentimentos interiores que dirigem as minhas ações. E agora, a única inspiração que recebo é a de escrever sobre as pessoas que sofrem. Eu também sofro. Exatamente como eles.

- Antes você cantava sobretudo sobre sexo...

- E agora canto sobre as pessoas pobres; e quando se canta sobre os pobres tomam-vos por um político. As pessoas ouvem e dizem: “Moxie canta para política”. Mas não é verdade! Eu apenas canto o que acontece aos meus irmãos e irmãs! Certo?

- Como é que se iniciou na música?

- Como uma espécie de faz-tudo. Sabe como é, o miúdo que leva os discos às lojas e pergunta: “Gosta deste? E daquele?” e que anota os pedidos para o patrão. Era o que fazia na altura em 65/66. Tinha 17 anos. E como gostava muito de cantar, empreguei-me num trabalho onde isso poderia acontecer-me, compreende? Certo dia, estava eu a cantar e o patrão disse-me: “Tens boa voz, miúdo. E se tentasses gravar qualquer coisa?”. Nessa noite fui procurar dois amigos e pedi-lhes para me ajudarem a escrever uma canção. Chamava-se Buy You a Rainbow. Os dois tipos fizeram o coro e escolhemos um nome, os Emotions. A canção vendeu-se bem, sabe? Subiu até ao número dois do hit-parede das duas estações de rádio e ao mesmo tempo.

- Você tornou-se célebre através duma canção chamada “Wet Dream” (Sonho Molhado) que fez furor na Inglaterra, em 1969. Ela estava no segundo lugar, quando a BBC a proibiu, devido aos seus versos muito sugestivos...

- Yeah! É uma imagem da qual eu tento afastar-me. Foi um sucesso que me permitiu fazer uma tournée na Inglaterra, percorrendo todas as cidades, grandes e pequenas, chegando mesmo até Cardiff. Sentia-me embaraçado por ter de dizer às pessoas que a canção era acerca dum telhado furado quando, na verdade, era acerca de fazer amor que ela se tratava. O meu problema é que as pessoas ainda esperam esse gênero de canções da minha parte, enquanto eu tento mudar de rumo. Aqui na Jamaica tomamos o caminho que nos apetece. A isso chama-se liberdade. Os jamaicanos gostam de ser livres. Não importa a que custo. E gostamos que as pessoas nos considerem como seres humanos, quer dizer, que possamos ir ao Sheraton sem que as pessoas nos olhem de lado e digam: “Oh! Ele é de Kingston 12 (Trench Town). Que vem ele fazer a Kingston 2?” Porque Kingston 12 é o ghetto e Kingston 2 é a cidade moderna, é quase como se houvesse uma fronteira a atravessar para se chegar lá. Porque um tipo está vestido com um saco de batatas e não cheira a água de colônia, eles dizem: “O que é que este faz aqui?”.

As pessoas deviam compreender que um homem é um homem, seja ele rico ou não. O que tu possuis não te dá o direito a três metros de terreno quando morreres e a mim a apenas dois. Dois metros é a medida de toda a gente. Só que com a inflação – hi! hi! hi! hi! – vamos só ter direito a metro e meio cada um. Cada homem é um homem e deseja o que lhe é dado, quer dizer a vida. E tu vives, percebes? Tu vives no amor e na unidade. Partilha o teu pão quando eu não tiver e eu partilharei o meu quando for preciso. É isso que eu prego.
