O cantor jamaicano Manley Augustus Buchanen, conheçido como Big Youth, nasceu em fevereiro de 1955 em Trench Town, no Jubilee Hospital. Um dos cinco filhos de uma mãe pastora anglicana e de um pai policial. Saiu da escola aos 14 anos e começou o trabalho em sua juventude como motorista de táxi e mecânico nos hotéis Skyline e Sheraton em Kingston.

Iniciou-se com uma canção sobre motos, “Ace 90 Skank”. Os seus discos singles sobre o combate final de pesos pesados que se realizou em 1973 em Kingston, “George Foreman” e “Foreman and Frazier”, trouxeram-lhe um êxito bastante fácil, até porque o favorito jamaicano, Foreman, pôs Frazier a nocaute sem dificuldades. “House of Dreadlocks” e “Natty Cultural Dread” estabeleceram Big Youth como a voz dos Rastas e até Bob Marley disse que Big Youth era o seu músico favorito.

Muito excêntrico e extravagante, o mais rebelde dos músicos de reggae mandou colocar pedras amarelas, vermelhas e verdes em forma de coração em seus dentes anteriores.
